Georg Friedrich Kauffmann is perhaps best known as one of the finalists who lost out to Johann Sebastian Bach in the contest for the post of Kantor at the Thomaskirche in Leipzig. That's no great disgrace, of course, and Kauffmann did continue after that to pursue a successful career as organist elsewhere. He later published a collection of chorale preludes, "Harmonische Seelenlust", of which the present recording brings us a selection.

It is in effect a compendium of organ chorale variation techniques, illustrating a wide variety of treatments of a large number of Lutheran chorale melodies. And it's precisely in that large number that the limitations of this music reside. For these are all short, sometimes very short pieces - usually no more than a couple of minutes, some still less than that, there being 34 such works on this single disc.

And although many of them open promisingly enough, they do not develop significantly or amount to very much in the end. Having said that, this is accomplished music, pleasant enough to listen to and well performed and recorded here.

The organist Maurizio Croci, playing the Treutmann organ of the Stiftskirche in Grauhof, does an excellent job and makes as persuasive a case as possible for the music; in a few of the pieces, his instrument is joined by an oboist stating the chorale melody where specified by the composer.

The Lutheran chorales are, of course, splendid melodic material, and are still fine to listen to even in these brief excursions. But don't expect the magnificent structures or the complex, extended and imaginative masterpieces offered by the great baroque composers named above.

If, however, you are inclined to investigate Kauffmann further, there is also a complete recording of the Harmonische Seelenlust collection on three CDs, played by Rainer Goede on the Hildebrandt organ of St. That's on the Mitra Classics label; it's not listed by Amazon at present, but it's available from the label's own website or from German mail order sources such as jpc.

If anything I would say that set is slightly preferable to the present CD - but only, of course, if you're serious about investigating the work of this interesting but minor composer.
